Candy Memories

We used to get 2 pieces for a penny at a local drug store, by the time I had kids they were a penny apiece. My 3rd child loved them as much as I did, and we used to play gambling games with them as our betting chips. Mary from Iowa
As a kid growing up in Auburn, Indiana, my friends and I would find bad ways to earn money by having mobile Kool-Aid stands (a little red wagon), raking leaves, even a neighborhood carnival one time. Then we would take our pennies, nickels, and dimes to Hoover's store, which was a little neighborhood store in the front of their house, and take our time deciding what candy to spend our hard-earned money on. They had nickel candy bars on the counter and in the ice cream freezer in the summer, but we usually ended up buying penny candy because we could get lots of different candy. One of my favorites was the cherry dollars and red hot dollars because they were 2 for a penny. All that yummy gooey-ness sticky to my teeth!! Yum!! Patricia from Washington
I remember having a little gas station down the road that sold penny candy 2 for a penny. My allowance of $.25 a week netted me 50 red hot dollar chewy round candies. The owner knew when I walked in the door what I wanted that he would already have them in the little brown candy bag! In 1972 that gas station was a victim of the hurricane Agnes that brought a huge flood to upstate NY where I grew up. Our penny candy days were behind us. Karen from Florida
