Hershey's Kisses History

Hershey's Kisses were first introduced in 1907 by the Hershey Chocolate Company, which was founded by Milton Hershey in 1894. The name "Kisses" comes from the machine that produces them, which makes a kissing sound as the chocolate is deposited onto the conveyor belt.

Initially, Hershey's Kisses were wrapped by hand, and they were sold primarily in the northeastern United States. However, in 1921, a new machine was invented that could wrap the Kisses automatically, which allowed for mass production and distribution to expand across the country.

Over the years, Hershey's has introduced many variations of Kisses, including milk chocolate, dark chocolate, and white chocolate, as well as flavored varieties such as caramel-filled, almond-filled, and peppermint. Hershey's also offers seasonal Kisses, such as the popular red and green foil-wrapped Kisses for Christmas and the pastel-colored foil-wrapped Kisses for Easter.

Today, Hershey's Kisses are sold in more than 80 countries around the world and are one of the most recognizable and beloved chocolate treats.

Hershey's Kisses Memories

Hershey's Kisses box

When I was a child I had a never ending sweet tooth, my weakness being chocolate. My mother always joked that I had a hollow leg. Every time she would make me chocolate chip cookies I would end up in time out for swiping the chocolate chips.

One day mom came home from the grocery store and started putting away stuff when I spotted a bag of, what I thought at the time were chocolate chips. The bag looked different so I asked her what they were. She explained to me that she had a solution to my cravings. She opened the bag and unwrapped the biggest chocolate chip I had ever seen! She told me they were Hershey's Kisses and gave me one-I was hooked. I had never tasted such a creamy chocolate treat in my short life.

After that day I would go to her when my sweet tooth would kick in and tell her I would trade her some kisses for some Kisses, Hersheys Kisses of course. I go visit her and to this day say to her "hey mom trade ya some kisses for some Kisses" and she always makes the trade. Thank you for a wonderful site and a wonderful way to share my favorite memory. ~ Ashley from Missouri
