Gummi Bears History

Gummy bears were first invented in Germany in the 1920s by a candy maker named Hans Riegel. Riegel was the founder of the Haribo company, which is still one of the leading manufacturers of gummy candies today.

The original gummy bear was shaped like a standing bear and was inspired by the dancing bears that were popular in Europe at the time. The candy was made from a mixture of sugar, gelatin, and flavorings, and it quickly became popular in Germany.

In the 1960s, gummy bears were introduced to the United States, and they quickly became a popular candy there as well. Today, gummy bears are sold in a wide variety of colors and flavors, and they are enjoyed by people of all ages all around the world.

Over the years, gummy bears have also been featured in popular culture. They have been referenced in movies, TV shows, and even in a popular song by the group, The Beatles.

Gummi Bears Memories

One day when I was in fourth grade, my teacher brought Gummi Bears in to share with the class. She explained that the candy originated in Germany and then gave us time to enjoy the treat. That day, on recess my friends and I used some Gummi Bears that we had saved from class to play all sorts of pretend games.

We held the Bears and played "house" with them. We played "surgery" but biting off various Bear parts, and then expanded our group of playmates by engaging the boys in a roaring game of "Gummi war." We rolled on the ground James Bond style launching Gummi Bears at our surprise-stricken classmates and teachers. That was a day I will never forget, and Gummi Bears will always be my favorite candy. ~ Stacy from Ohio
