Goobers History

Goober candy, also known as Goobers, is a type of chocolate-covered peanuts that has been popular in the United States since the early 20th century. The candy was first introduced by the Blumenthal Chocolate Company in Philadelphia in 1925.

The name "Goober" is actually a slang term for peanuts that originated in the southern United States. The Blumenthal Chocolate Company decided to use the name for their candy and marketed it as "Goober Peas" to capitalize on the popularity of the term.

Initially, Goober Peas were sold in small boxes and were marketed as a snack that could be eaten at the theater. However, the candy quickly gained popularity and was soon sold in larger packages and in various retail outlets.

In 1949, the Blumenthal Chocolate Company was acquired by the Nestle Company, which continued to produce Goober candy. Today, Goober candy is primarily sold in movie theaters and is a popular snack for moviegoers.

Over the years, Nestle has introduced several variations of Goober candy, including Goober Bites, which are bite-sized pieces of chocolate-covered peanuts, and Goober Peanut Butter and Jelly, which is a peanut butter and jelly spread that comes in a single jar.

Goobers Memories

Sometimes during the summer months in the mid to late 60's when I was 8 or 9 years old if my brother and I had been very good all week, our parents would take us to the drive-in on Friday or Saturday night. Our town had 2 drive-ins. One was the Skyview and the other was the Goober.

We would take a picnic supper and after we had eaten all of our supper we were allowed to go to the concession stand to buy something for dessert. I could hardly wait to get my quarter so I could go buy a box of Goobers. Between the movies (it was always a double feature) we would go to the concession stand then down front to the swings. Ahhh! what memories! ~ Kay from Alabama
