Goo Goo Clusters History

In 1912, America's first combination candy bar was developed by Howell Campbell who founded the Standard Candy Company. Campbell was the very first confectioner to make a candy bar with multiple ingredients (i.e. with more than just solid milk chocolate).

Goo Goo Clusters

He made Goo Goo Clusters by combining peanuts, caramel, marshmallow and milk chocolate together into a deliciously round cluster. Goo Goos were originally sold unwrapped in big glass candy jars. People loved the delicious new concoction and Goo Goo Clusters soon became the company's best selling product.

There are many variations as to how the Goo Goo Cluster got its name, but the actual story goes like this. Mr. Howell Campbell used to ride a streetcar to work everyday. Soon after he developed his delicious new confection, word spread quickly about his tasty treat. People didn't know how to ask for or what to call this confectionery delight. Mr. Campbell was extremely excited that his newest concoction was the talk of the town, but even he, himself was baffled as to what to call his latest creation.

One day Mr. Campbell was discussing his dilemma with a fellow passenger on the way to work. The lady passenger, a school teacher, remarked that the candy bar is "So Good, People Will Ask For It From Birth!" Thinking about what the woman said, Mr. Campbell recalled the first sounds his newborn son made; Goo Goo!

Goo Goo Clusters Memories

One day when my older brother and I were at home, we saw a case of candy my uncle Fred had sent us. We knew if we opened the box we would be beaten, so we waited till our parents came home. By the time our parents came home all my brothers and sisters (all 11 of us) were sitting in the kitchen for anticipation of what was in the box.

So when the parents opened the box, we just stared at all of the goo goo cluster, there must of been thousands of them, it seemed. We all had never tried a goo goo cluster but once we did we were all hooked. We all ate the goo goo clusters everyday for a week or so until we got sick. After they were all gone we all swore we would never eat a goo goo cluster again.

Until we recently had a family reunion with our whole family. It was a fun experience, and we all had a job to bring one food item or game or something for us to do. And of course the family comedian I am I brought a gigantic case of goo goo clusters . My whole family was shocked because none of them could find the clusters, they all told me how much they missed the clusters and wanted to have more. So I don't know but know my family calls me the goo goo cluster gal. ~ Betty from Washington
