Goldenberg's Peanut Chews History

Goldenberg's Peanut Chews is a candy bar made with peanuts and molasses that has been around for over a century. The candy was first produced in 1917 by the Goldenberg Candy Company, which was founded in 1890 by David Goldenberg in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Originally, Goldenberg's Peanut Chews were marketed as a high-energy snack for soldiers during World War I. The candy's combination of peanuts and molasses provided a quick source of energy and protein for troops on the front lines.

After the war, Goldenberg's Peanut Chews became a popular snack among civilians as well. The candy was sold in drugstores and candy shops throughout the Philadelphia area, and its popularity quickly spread to other parts of the country.

Over the years, the candy bar has undergone several changes in ownership and production. In the 1950s, the family-owned Goldenberg Candy Company was sold to the Philadelphia Chewing Gum Corporation, which continued to produce Goldenberg's Peanut Chews for several decades.

In the 1990s, the brand was acquired by the Just Born candy company, which is best known for producing Peeps marshmallow candies. Just Born continues to produce Goldenberg's Peanut Chews to this day, and the candy remains a beloved snack among candy lovers and Philadelphians in particular.

In recent years, Goldenberg's Peanut Chews have also gained a following among vegans and those with dietary restrictions, as the candy is free from animal products and gluten. Despite the changes in ownership and production, Goldenberg's Peanut Chews have remained a beloved candy with a rich history and loyal fan base.

The originals are made with dark chocolate. At some time later the company added a milk-coated piece and called it Chew-ets.

Goldenberg's Peanut Chews Memories

Goldenberg's Peanut Chews

I am 42 years old. Back in the 60's when I was a really young kid with 3 brothers close to my age, I lived in Philadelphia, around the corner from the Goldberg Peanut Chew factory. Just past the factory was a candy store named Nellie was about as old as a person can get, and her store was even older. My fondest memory of Nellie's was the long windowed penny candy display with dozens of candy selections.

On hot summer days, the smell of peanut chews being made at the factory would waft down my block and get my brothers and me ready for some candy. One such hot summer day, my mother gave us a quarter (enough to bring back quite a haul in penny candies) and off we went to Nellie's. We made our purchase with much fanfare when we left Nellie's we parked ourselves quickly at one of the Peanut Chew Factory's loading dock doors to divide up what we had bought.

As we sat there and a man from the factory came out the loading dock door with a big blue commercial sized box of Peanut Chews. "Don't eat that other candy, he said to us, "Eat Goldenberg Peanut Chews" as he handed us four the entire box. We believed at that moment that we were the luckiest kids in the world. Funny enough, the candy that I was munching on when the fellow approached us was none other than a Peanut Chew! ~ Luis from New Jersey
