Butterfinger Candy Bar History

The Butterfinger candy bar has a fascinating history that spans over nine decades. It was created by the Curtiss Candy Company in Chicago, Illinois, in 1923. Originally known as "Curtiss Candy Company's Chocolate Butterfinger," it featured a crispy peanut butter-flavored core covered in chocolate.

In 1964, the Curtiss Candy Company was acquired by Nestlé, a Swiss multinational food and drink company. Nestlé made improvements to the Butterfinger recipe, including adding a bright yellow-orange color to the candy's flaky, crisp peanut butter center.

In the 1980s, Butterfinger gained popularity through memorable advertising campaigns and its catchy tagline, "Nobody better lay a finger on my Butterfinger!" Commercials often depicted comedic scenarios where someone attempted to steal another person's Butterfinger.

In 2001, Nestlé reformulated the Butterfinger recipe to make it more resistant to melting. This change involved altering the chocolate coating, which some consumers noticed resulted in a slight taste difference.

Butterfinger has introduced various limited edition and seasonal variations over the years. These include Butterfinger BB's (bite-sized versions), Butterfinger Crisp (wafer-based version), Butterfinger Dark, and Butterfinger Cups.

In 2019, Nestlé launched a rebranding campaign for Butterfinger, featuring updated packaging and a new logo. The aim was to modernize the brand's image and appeal to a younger audience.

Butterfinger Candy Bar Memories

I remember when I was a lad of ten. I was living in Wisconsin at the time. My family and I were on a road trip to see Ed Geins farmhouse, when all of a sudden a deer darted out in front of our car, and the next thing we know our car is out of commission. My mother was pregnant, and my father didn't want to leave her, so it was up to me to walk to a gas station for help.

When I walked into the store the first thing that caught my eye was Butterfinger. I knew that I couldn't possibly carry the gas all the way back to the car, so I figured someone would come by eventually, so I bought Butterfingers with the money instead. A few hours later I got back to the car, with chocolate on my lips and my breath smelling of peanut butter. I could already tell my father was going to give me quite a licking, but it was completely worth it for those delicious Butterfingers. ~ Eric from Pennsylvania
