Candy Memories

I had a great childhood growing up in a 1-square mile town in central New Jersey during the '70s & '80s. This was only made better by our almost daily visits to the general store. The gentleman that worked there most of the time when I was a young girl was named "Phil". He was probably around 50 years old when I was a kid, and he was always sweet to all the children who frequented the store. We'd show up with pockets full of change...mostly pennies. We'd get TONS of Swedish Fish and some other penny candies. If I was getting a dollar's worth of fish, I would ask for one hundred fish and Phil would get a little brown bag out and begin to count them out for me. You would guess that when he counted "1, 2, 3..." there would be then number of candy fish in the little brown bag that was equal to the number he had counted. Well, that was never the case! Phil would count "1"...and instead of one fish going into the bag, it was more like 1 hand full of fish going in the bag! Now, don't get me wrong, this was not a problem for me nor any of the other local children! Once he counted to 100...you had SOOOO many candy fish! It was so much fun! I'm almost 48 and it still makes me smile thinking of Phil and buying candy. The trips to the general store and the special friendships he had with us children is probably why I absolutely LOVE candy to this day...and I seriously love it WAY too much! He will always have an extra special, sweet place in my heart. Susan from North Carolina
When I had Swedish fish for the first time I was 9 yrs old. Every week I got an allowance to go to the penny store, which had the best candy and gum. i also bought Indian pumpkun seeds which I still buy. Nancy from Massachusetts
Growing up in Fall River, MA, finding a quarter on the street and running down to the corner store to buy 25 Swedish Fish! The days of bulk penny candy are long gone! :( Chris from Massachusetts
