Candy Memories

I was the only girl growing up in a neighborhood of boys... so that meant that whenever anyone was "captured" and tied to a tree, it was me.... my only ransom was root beer keg candy... thank goodness as it was my salvation.... that and my younger but bigger brother... I remember being tied to a huge rock, with no candy and no brother... that was a long afternoon before I was finally released... the best revenge was dirt bombs filled with inkberry juice... stained the dickens on whatever it landed on... preferable the back of a retreating "enemy." Barbara from Virginia
In 1973, I was in the 2nd grade and very behind in my math skills. My teacher, Miss Johnsen, would spend extra time and work with me on math problems during recess. After several months of working with me, she added an incentive-Root Beer Barrels. I thought they were the best candy I'd ever tasted. So I worked really hard on my math and soon became really good; getting all of my assignments turned in and passing my tests. Every time I got an A on my tests, I would get a root beer barrel and would be happy and proud the rest of the day. Later on in high school and college, I realized math was my favorite subject. I believe it was her patience and the root beer barrels that contributed to that. Tracie from Utah
When I was a little girl I would work for my aunt little jobs and earn money to go to a country store called Russell Patrick's. He has all these penny candies root beer, butterscotch, etc and they were shaped like little barrels. He had the old fashion stick candy in different flavors. Such great memories going there with my dad. I could get a whoke bag of candy for 50 cents and a coke in glass bottle for 25 cents. The good times.... Katrina from Kentucky
