Candy Memories

As a child we lived in a poor neighborhood but it had a candy store on every other street back when candy shoe laces were 2 for a penny. They use to have what was called surprise bags for a nickel. Anyway I was always glad when I got the laces in my bag. What I would do was save my laces until I had at least 100 then I would braid it like it was hair and connect them all together and slowly eat them. I use to make really cool hairdos out of the candy pony tails, buns, shignons bangs, you name it it was like hair me when every I would see someone with a nice bun or pigtails I would crave the candy laces and would do anything to get them. That is why I'm sooooo glad I found your website so that I can now order that I can get. My sister to this day calls every once in a while to tell me she found some in some store here or there they are so hard to find the (real ones) I forget the company name who made them I can't remember if it was Heide or something. Anyway I'm now a very successful photographer and I still love my shoe laces. I'm glad I can order them now finally... yours thankfully. Dawnita from Virginia
Candy Memory: I remember when I was around 12 years old my family owned a cafe in a small town in Nebraska that catered to the local teenagers as a hangout...pinball machines, pool tables, Jukebox, burgers, fries, pizza, malts & shakes, etc. We also had candies for purchase and my mother would let me help with the candy purchase orders. Our supplier used to offer Y&S licorice laces in several flavors, strawberry, cherry, grape, orange, black, etc. These laces used to come in long and narrow white boxes, layered out length ways and wrapped in a parchment type paper. We would sell them as individual laces @ a penny a piece or 6 for 5 cents. Anyways the licorice was very flavorful, tasty and became one of my most favorite candies of all time. In fact when I reminisce about those laces my mouth begins to crave them all over again. Another item that comes to mind were cherry flavored coins that came in a bulk box. I do not recall the brand name but do remember that the coins were about the size of a 50 cent piece and about 1/8" in thickness, soft and chewy. Likewise they were in a white box and they had the best cherry flavor. The juju coins of today do not even come close to the chewy goodness or flavor that I recall. It would be a nice find to enjoy products like that again. I wish those long forgotten candies of our childhood could be recreated once more...sure do miss those items of yesteryear. As a child I lived near railroad tracks in rural Pennsburg, PA. Every Saturday around 12 noon the train whistle blew and I ran to get there before the Red Caboose. The conductor waved as he threw out a large bag filled with Penny Candy. We would scramble to gather all the pieces. My favorite were the Red String LICORICE pieces always tucked neatly in as separate baggie. Just loved that Candy Train!! Donna from Pennsylvania
