Candy Memories
Jolly Ranchers are a wonderful candy, and bring up many a fond memory every time I smell that wonderful scent they give off in an overly warm car. The first story I have relates more to learning violin than it does to Jolly Ranchers. I was using the Suzuki Method of learning an instrument, and was nearly through the first book, when I came upon a short piece called the Lucky Farmer. My dad loved Jolly Ranchers and decided that was a better name for the song than what they'd given it. The second story is shorter. I was losing my baby teeth and, as everyone knows, was having a painful time of getting them out. I decided a change was in order. I figured that the painful part was all the wiggling and pulling it out sideways; if I could find something sticky to pull it out straight, then it would be a lot easier. The solution came to me while I was sucking on a Jolly Rancher in the car. When you bite a Jolly Rancher you've just put in your mouth, it sticks to your teeth pretty good. With this method I pulled out 7 teeth near painlessly.

Growing up in Colorado, the best part of the drive to Grandma's was going past the Jolly Rancher factory. We always tried to guess what flavor they were making based upon the aroma that flooded the air near there.

When I was a kid my mother worked at the Jolly Rancher factory. For my birthday one year she took me and all my friends for a tour of the factory. One of the workers pulled some candy off as it ran down a conveyor belt and it was still warm. We put it I our mouths and it hardened to the shape of the roof of our mouths. It was an epic birthday!
