Candy Memories

There were three of us little girls in my family. In the 1960s we lived in a country neighborhood that had a little store with it's own special door that entered into a candy store, every little kids dream. My mom would give us each a coin and we would parade the half block up the hill with our childhood friends, climb the three old wood steps and step into our dream world. The bell that rang as we opened the door notified the proprietors that we had entered. The shelves might have had other goods but the only thing we cared about were the sweets. The owners were conscientious to stock and display the most tempting morsels any youngster could possibly fancy. We'd thoughtfully choose from Jawbreakers, bubble gum, Fireballs, chocolates, Sugar Daddies, Sugar Babies, Fire Stix, Satellite Wafers, Boston Baked Beans. Candy Lipstick, Button Candy, the choices seemed endless, counting as we went along to make sure we had enough money. Carrying the treats in our small hands we'd then set them the counter in front of the clerk who would count them up and then place it all in our own personal little brown paper bag. After scurrying outside and down the steps with our little bags in hand we headed back home down the hill, deciding which to eat first, unwrapping our tasty delights, popping them into our mouths and happily chattering the whole way home. These were special days with fond memories that last a lifetime. Patricia from Wisconsin
