Stick Candy History
Stick candy, also called candy sticks, barber pole candy or barber poles have been in production since before the Civil War.
They are usually four to seven inches in length and 1/4 to 1/2 inch in diameter, but in some cases they are made in sizes up to 12 inches in length and two inches in diameter. Like candy canes, they usually have at least two different colors swirled together in a spiral pattern, resembling a barber's pole.
Stick Candy Memories
When I was a little girl I used to go visit my grandparents every Sunday after church. I loved to go and sit and visit with them but my favorite part of my visit was always Strawberry Sticks. My grandfather was a quiet man but whenever I would come to see him he would always have a special treat for me. He had a sweater he would always wear and he would always have a Strawberry Stick in the pocket waiting for me.
Now that I am older and my grandfather has passed away, I miss that special time with him. I wanted to honor his memory in a unique way at my wedding this year so I am using his favorite candy, Strawberry Sticks, as my wedding favors. I hope that my family and my new in-laws can appreciate the gesture and share my grandfather's memory with me on my most important day. ~ Kristen from Pennsylvania
