Spree Candy History
Spree candy is a colorful, disk-shaped candy known for its sweet and tangy flavors. Here's a brief history of Spree candy:
Spree candy was introduced in the United States in 1965 by the Sunline Inc. candy company. It was originally manufactured in the United Kingdom under the name "Marathon" and was brought to the U.S. market with a new name and branding.
The candy's name "Spree" was chosen to evoke a sense of excitement and fun, reflecting the vibrant colors and intense flavors of the candy.
Spree candy is made using a process called panning. This involves repeatedly coating a candy center with layers of colored sugar and flavoring until the desired size and texture are achieved. The result is a thin, hard shell with a chewy center.
The original Spree candy featured a variety of fruit flavors, including orange, cherry, lemon, grape, and lime. Each flavor was represented by a different color.
Throughout its history, Spree candy has gone through various ownership changes. In 1983, Sunmark Corporation acquired Sunline Inc. and became the manufacturer of Spree candy. Later, in 1984, Sunmark Corporation was acquired by Nestlé, and Spree candy became part of the Nestlé candy portfolio.
Over the years, Spree candy has remained popular among candy enthusiasts of all ages. Its combination of vibrant colors, tangy taste, and crunchy texture make it a favorite choice for those who enjoy a sweet and tart candy experience.
In addition to the classic Spree candy, various spin-off products and flavor variations have been introduced. These include Chewy Spree, Spree Jelly Beans, Spree Gum, and other limited-edition flavors and packaging designs.
Today, Spree candy continues to be manufactured and distributed by Nestlé. It can be found in a wide range of retail locations, including supermarkets, convenience stores, movie theaters, and online retailers.
The history of Spree candy showcases its longevity as a beloved candy brand known for its bold colors, tangy flavors, and distinctive texture. It has maintained its popularity over the years and remains a recognizable and enjoyable treat for candy lovers worldwide.
Spree Candy Memories
Spree was created by the Sunline Candy Company of St. Louis, MO in the mid-1960s. In the 1970s the brand was bought by Nestle' who markets the candy under the Willy Wonka brand.
One day he decided that he would like to try something different and he picked up a roll of Spree. I picked out my usual penny candy fare. We got back to the house and spread out our goodies. My Grandpa put his roll of Spree on the table. They were so bright and shiny that I just had to open them!
We tried them together and they were so different than the usual stuff we picked out... they were definitely a kick in the mouth! I was even more enamored with them when I saw the color of my Grandpa's tongue as he laughed! Bright orange! To this day when I eat Spree, I think of my Grandfather and that makes the candy that much better for me. ~ Jennifer from Oregon
I remember always going to the Jersey shore for 2 weeks when I was a child. We went for years. Finally my cousin and I were old enough to go to the boardwalk ourselves. I remember placing a bet on the wheel in order to win candy. My number came up and my cousin told me to pick Spree. I had never had them before, so I took her advice and told the person who spun the wheel that was what I wanted. That was the first time I ever had them.
Now whenever I have Spree I think of my entire family at the shore (many are gone now), I remember feeling grown up then, and now I remember being a kid from Jersey that loved and still does love the shore, the boardwalk, and Spree! ~Dawn from New Jersey
