Jawbreakers
We have Jawbreakers from 3/8 inch to 2 inches in diameter. Ferrara Pan calls their Jawbreakers, Jaw Busters. The larger ones are called Bruisers... seems appropriate, doesn't it?
Jawbreakers History
The name "Jawbreaker" is a generic name used by the candy industry to indicate a piece of hard candy. Prior to when Ferrara Pan began making the product, many people in the candy industry also developed a so-called "Jawbreaker".
Once Ferrara Pan became successful with the Jaw Breaker product, they began to establish credibility which led to creating a prominent brand within the company. Eventually Ferrara Pan changed the name Jawbreakers to Jawbusters to distinguish their brand. While the Ferrara Pan Candy Company did not invent the jawbreaker, they have been making them since 1919.
Jawbreakers Memories
I grew up in New England in a very small town in Maine. I have to say it was the absolute best place to grow up and led to many childhood memories. One of my fondest memories was when my grandmother used to send me to the store for groceries and to the pharmacy to pick up medicine for her. The two places were right next door to each other and only about a 15 minute bike ride from her house.
She would send me with $20.00, a shopping list and my empty backpack. She always made sure I had money left over to get penny candy from pharmacy. I always looked forward to getting the jaw breakers because they always lasted the longest. The yellow and orange were always my favorite colors and were the first ones I ate.
While I was there recently I made sure to make the time to take my niece to the pharmacy (which is still there) and let her pick out some penny candy even though it is now more like nickel candy. She asked me what I wanted and I pointed to the jawbreakers at the end of the row. She looked at me with her big brown eyes and smiled as she said " Those are my favorite too Auntie Kate". I love that I can share times like that with her and that she will grow up with the same memories I did. ~ Katie from Florida
