Hot Tamales History
Hot Tamales candy is a type of cinnamon-flavored candy that has been popular in the United States since its introduction in the mid-1950s. The candy is produced by the Just Born candy company, which was founded by Sam Born in 1923.
Born, who was a Russian immigrant, initially worked as a candy maker in France before moving to the United States and starting his own candy company. Just Born's first major success came with the introduction of a marshmallow candy called "Peeps" in the 1950s.
In 1955, Just Born introduced Hot Tamales candy, which quickly became a hit with consumers. The candy was designed to appeal to the growing popularity of spicy foods in the United States, and its cinnamon flavor was a departure from the more traditional fruit-flavored candies of the time.
Over the years, Hot Tamales candy has remained a popular choice for people who enjoy spicy and cinnamon-flavored sweets. The candy is also often used for baking and decorating, and has been featured in a variety of recipes and food products.
Today, Just Born remains a family-owned and operated company, and Hot Tamales candy continues to be one of its most popular products. The candy is sold in many different countries around the world, and has become a beloved part of American candy culture.
Hot Tamales Memories
When I was a little kid, we always went to my grandma and grandpa's farm for Easter. All of my aunts, uncles, and cousins gathered there for our annual Easter egg hunt. Every family brought a different kind of candy. My great grandma always brought hot tamales every year, they were my favorite candy.
Then all of the adults would go outside and hide all of the candy around the farm. When they were done hiding the candy they would give all of us kids a list of candy that we had to find. I am no longer a kid, not even a teenager, but every year we have an Easter egg hunt for all the grandchildren, no matter the age. We always have a blast, and I still always try to find my hot tamales first! ~ Kendra from South Dakota
