Big League Chew History

Big League Chew was introduced in 1980. While sitting in a bullpen one night, pitcher Rob Nelson and former NY Yankee all-star Jim Bouton came up with the idea for something different and fun to chew - shredded bubble gum in a pouch. Bouton approached Amurol Confections only to discover that they had already begun developing such a product. Nelson suggested the name "Big League Chew."

Big League Chew Memories

I remember when I was a really little girl, I loved baseball. I would watch baseball games on TV with my grandparents, and I would buy baseball cards by the box full, and I would always buy Big League Chew Bubble Gum because it was the coolest thing to what the real ball players chewed. I loved the shredded texture and fruit flavors, and of course the closeable pouch it came in.

I remember one time in specific, my father surprised me with tickets to go see the Detroit Tigers play baseball against the California Oakland A's. I was so excited! My dad bought me a bag of Big League Chew Bubble Gum to take with us to the game, I would chew it by the mouthful, my cheeks stuffed with the gum, and I would try to spit just like the players on the field spit their tobacco. I had a blast.

After the game, when we were leaving, I met Jose Canseco, and proudly showed him my Big League Chew, and told him that I chewed the same stuff that he did. He winked at me, and played along and told me that it was his favorite also! I won't ever forget that. ~ Ashley from Michigan
