Candy Memories

Whenever I smell anything with Anise in it, I think back to my childhood. As far back as I can remember when I was a child in the 60's, my father always had Anise squares. I'm sure my mother was the one who bought these but to this day I have never seen her eat one. None of my friends had ever even heard of these & many spit them out as soon as they taste them. I also remember them making fun of the word anise & we all had a big laugh. They have such a great licorice taste but even as an adult I have had trouble getting people to try them. My mouth starts to water when I watch a TV show & they cook with fennel & say it taste like anise. I realize I haven't bought these for some years & now really crave that smooth taste. I'm sure they are still as delicious as they always were. I think I'll have to give some to my dad too. Pam from Wisconsin
I grew up in Wisconsin in the 50's. During the summer we would frequently go to the "Municipal Pool" to swim and cool off. Being the oldest of eight I usually was accompanied by several siblings, but on this particular day I was alone. I traveled by bus to the pool and had bus money, a dime, to travel home. But that day I decided to visit a tiny "Mom and Pop" candy store that was only a block away from the pool. The store was basically a place where they sold popcorn by the bag but they had other items. My eye was immediately drawn to some hard red candy in a glass container. It just about sparkled and was dusted with a superfine coating of sugar. I paid a nickel for a small bag of anise candy and also splurged on a 5 cent bag of roasted peanuts. Thus began my life-long love affair with anise candy. I can remember walking home with two treats that I had all to myself and savored the sweet and the salty. I know that it is popular to disapprove of sugar, but I could not imagine a life without candy! Kathleen from Wisconsin
