Whistle Pops memories... In the
late 1950s, my little sister and I, ages four and seven, would stay
with our grandparents at a motel next to the boardwalk in Long Beach,
NY during the summer. We'd suck on our whistle pops while we waited an
hour for our lunches to settle before we were allowed to go swimming
in the pool. Our grandmother would let us sit on the chaise lounges
around the pool area, in our skirted one-piece swimsuits, so she
didn't have to hear the whistling.
We would sneak onto the beach
and try to find our swimming grandfather by the cigar sticking up from
his mouth, but wouldn't dare go in the ocean or sit in the sand for
fear of ruining our precious pops! We'd try to make them last as long
as possible, and put them down carefully when it was time to swim
again. Thanks for the memory! ~ Nancy from Pennsylvania
As a little kid when I was
maybe 8 or 9 we used to always go to the town square. I would always beg and beg and beg to get a whistle pop, and my dad would just ask why
I didn't just get a regular whistle cause that's all I'd use it for.
So anyway one day my mom gave in and gave me a whistle pop. I kept blowing that thing and blowing it
until finally, it cracked and the chip of it flew off and hit my brother square in the eye, and to this day...I don't eat whistle pops
anymore. ~ Alex from Texas
I was one of the kids in the
Whistle Pop commercial in the 70's. In the commercial all of the
other kids skipped around singing the Whistle Pop song. Then, the
camera panned around to a little freckle-faced kid (me) sitting on a
park bench. I blew on my Whistle Pop and said "It's the best whistle
I've ever tasted."
To this day, I can't bring my
kids around a candy shop without checking to see if Whistle Pops are
making a comeback. It was my one and only brush with fame. And, it
truly was a great tasting whistle. ~ Chris from New York
I remember when I was around
5 years old (In the early 90's) everyday it seemed, my mom or dad
would take me to the local liquor store to treat me to some candy.
My dad had recently came back from being stationed out east in the
Navy and would always treat me to any candy I would want to try and
compensate for that.
Well, I chose Whistle Pops
because I could play with them and because they tasted so darn good!
I particularly liked how you could move the stick around sort of
like a trombone in order to get different sounds. Strangely, one of
my favorite parts of the pop was eating the waxy covering on the
bottom of the pop. I think they discontinued that nowadays, but it
was strangely good!
I've been looking for these Whistle Pops for years (as my little
sister has not had the pleasure of trying them yet!) and I'm very
glad to see them on your website! ~ Val from California
