Whoppers History

Whoppers are malted milk balls that have been a popular candy choice for many years. Here's a brief history of Whoppers candy:

Origins in the 1930s: Whoppers were first introduced in the 1930s by the Overland Candy Company, which later became the Leaf Candy Company. The original concept of Whoppers was inspired by a similar British candy called Maltesers.

Malted Milk Technology: Whoppers are made using a unique process called "malted milk technology." This involves combining malted barley and wheat flour with milk and other ingredients to create a crunchy and distinctive malted center.

Signature Shape and Coating: Whoppers are known for their round shape and smooth chocolate coating. The malted center is covered in a thin layer of milk chocolate, creating a sweet and satisfying taste experience.

Brand Acquisition: In 1996, Hershey's acquired the Leaf Candy Company, including the Whoppers brand. Hershey's has since continued to produce and distribute Whoppers under their ownership.

Variations and Flavors: Over the years, Whoppers have expanded their product line to include different flavors and variations. This includes seasonal variations like Whoppers Eggs for Easter and Whoppers Pumpkin Spice for Halloween.

Popularity and Availability: Whoppers have remained popular throughout the years and are widely available in many countries. They are commonly found in grocery stores, convenience stores, and candy shops, both as standalone treats and as ingredients in other desserts or snacks.

Marketing and Promotion: Whoppers have been promoted through various advertising campaigns over the years. Their unique malted milk taste and recognizable shape have been highlighted in commercials and print advertisements to attract consumers.

Whoppers have become a beloved candy option for those who enjoy the combination of malted milk and chocolate. Their distinct flavor, crunchy texture, and nostalgic appeal have contributed to their enduring popularity. Whether enjoyed on their own or used as an ingredient in recipes, Whoppers continue to be a treat that delights candy enthusiasts.

Whoppers Memories

"Whoppers" always remind me of Halloween! After emptying our pillowcase for the first time, we would venture out for one more round of trick-or-treating on the next block (it was a BIG thing when we were finally old enough to venture onto the block behind our house)!

When we were done for the night, it was our tradition to dump everything onto the dining room table and divide up the "like" candies into piles! My sister and I loved Whoppers, but my dad loved them more! I would keep out a pack or two for myself and then happily offer up the rest to my father; he always made a big production each year (to our benefit, I'm sure) to get the lions share of the Whoppers. It is a childhood memory that I will treasure forever! ~ Mary Beth from Michigan

As a little girl I absolutely loved whoppers. Well one year when I was about 5 years old, it was the night before Christmas. I asked my dad what to give Santa Claus because we didn't have any cookies. My dad smiled at me and said well, why don’t you leave him some of your whoppers and a glass of milk? So, that's what I did, come Christmas morning all but one whopper was left and it had a bite missing. ~ Jessica from Louisiana
