Tootsie Roll Midgees History

Tootsie Roll Midgees, also known as Tootsie Rolls, have a long and storied history. Here's an overview of their origins and evolution:

1896: Leo Hirschfield, an Austrian immigrant, founded the S. Stern & Company in New York City, which later became the Tootsie Roll Industries. He named the company after his daughter Clara, whose nickname was "Tootsie."

1907: The first Tootsie Rolls were created and introduced to the market. They were initially sold individually wrapped and became an instant hit due to their unique texture and flavor. Tootsie Rolls were softer and chewier than typical chocolate candies at the time.

World War I and World War II: Tootsie Rolls gained popularity during these periods as they were included in soldiers' rations due to their durability, resistance to melting, and long shelf life. They became known as the "candy of the doughboys."

Mid-1930s: The name "Midgees" was coined to refer to the smaller-sized Tootsie Rolls. Midgees were introduced as bite-sized versions of the original Tootsie Rolls and quickly became popular among consumers.

Mid-1960s: The Tootsie Roll Industries expanded the Midgees line by introducing flavored varieties. This included the introduction of Tootsie Fruit Rolls, which offered different fruit flavors wrapped in the classic Tootsie Roll texture.

1980s: Tootsie Roll Industries acquired the Cella's Confections company, which added Cella's Chocolate-Covered Cherries to their product lineup. These cherry-filled chocolates gained popularity and became an iconic product within the Tootsie Roll Industries portfolio.

Today, Tootsie Roll Midgees are a beloved classic candy and one of the most recognized products produced by Tootsie Roll Industries. They are known for their chewy, chocolatey texture and are often enjoyed as a nostalgic treat.

Tootsie Roll Midgees are available in various package sizes, including individual rolls, bags, and assorted mixes. They remain a popular choice for Halloween candy, party favors, and everyday snacking.

Throughout their history, Tootsie Roll Midgees have maintained their unique taste and enduring popularity, continuing to bring joy to candy lovers of all ages.

Tootsie Roll Midgees Memories

In the late 1940s, Tootsie Rolls were advertised on the comic pages of many Sunday newspapers. The main cartoon character was Captain Tootsie who was a Superman-like hero who took kids on various adventures.

As I began to chew I felt something hard inside the tootsie roll. I just ignored it but then it started to really taste bad. So I took the tootsie flavor roll out and when I looked at it one of my back molars was stuck in it. But not the one that was loose. So as you would expect I kind of freaked out and ran to the bathroom. After that day I made sure I hade absolutely NO loose teeth before eating a Tootsie flavor roll. ~ Angela from Wisconsin
