SweeTarts History

Sweetarts is a popular candy known for its combination of sweet and tart flavors. Here's a brief history of Sweetarts:

Origins: Sweetarts were introduced in the United States in 1963 by the Sunline Inc. company. They were created as a variation of the popular Pixy Stix candy, which also featured a sweet and tangy taste.

Tart 'n Tiny: The original Sweetarts were initially sold under the name "Sweethearts" and were in the form of small tablets. However, in 1967, the candy was rebranded as "Tart 'n Tiny" and featured a modified shape resembling small disks.

Rebranding as Sweetarts: In 1981, the candy underwent another rebranding and was renamed "Sweetarts," combining the words "sweet" and "tart" to reflect the candy's flavor profile. The name change coincided with a redesign of the candy's shape, which became slightly larger and flatter, resembling the current Sweetarts tablets.

Ownership Changes: Throughout the years, ownership of the Sweetarts brand changed hands multiple times. Sunline Inc., the original creator, was acquired by Rowntree Mackintosh in the 1980s. Rowntree Mackintosh, in turn, was purchased by Nestlé in 1988. Nestlé continues to manufacture and distribute Sweetarts.

Variations and Expansions: Over time, Sweetarts expanded its product line to include various formats and flavors. In addition to the classic Sweetarts tablets, different variations such as Sweetarts Ropes (licorice-like ropes with a sweet and tart filling), Sweetarts Chewy, and Sweetarts Mini Chewy were introduced. Limited-edition flavors and seasonal offerings are also released periodically.

Sweetarts Today: Sweetarts continue to be enjoyed by candy enthusiasts around the world. They are widely available in supermarkets, convenience stores, and online retailers. The candy's sweet and tart combination appeals to a wide range of tastes, making it a popular choice for those seeking a flavor-packed treat.

Sweetarts' enduring popularity and continued presence in the confectionery market are a testament to their unique taste and appeal. Whether enjoyed as a nostalgic treat or discovered by new generations, Sweetarts remain a recognizable and beloved candy brand.

SweeTarts Memories

When I was a little kid, My Great-Grand mother was a person that I spent all my time with. My cousins, all around the same age as me, would go over and play store, house, school, pretty much anything you can imagine at her house. Being a grandmother, she was always looking for ways to make us smile, giggle and laugh. Every time one of us was sad or if we did something good (like helping her clear dishes, cleaning up after we were done playing, sharing, etc.) she would reach into her purse, pull out a sweetart and say "Thank you for being such a sweetheart, my little sweetart."

When we received the sweetart, we would giggle with delightment, for our parents giving us candy wasn't something that happened too often. When my cousins and I were growing up and just learning how to read, she would praise us after reading a book to her, but giving us a sweetart. My great-grand mother isn't alive anymore... passing away from cancer a few years back, but I'll never forget how much of a Sweetart... err, I mean SweetHEART, she was to me. ~ Kristy from Pennsylvania
