Starburst Candy History

Starburst is a popular brand of fruit-flavored chewy candy that was first introduced in the United Kingdom in 1960. The candy was originally manufactured by Mars, Incorporated, which is also known for other well-known confectionery brands such as M&M's and Snickers.

The original concept for Starburst candies was to create a taffy-like chew that had a fruit flavor. The candy was initially called "Opal Fruits" and was launched in the UK. Opal Fruits gained popularity quickly and became known for its unique and intense fruit flavors. The original flavors included strawberry, lemon, orange, and lime.

In 1967, Mars, Incorporated decided to introduce Opal Fruits in the United States under the name Starburst. The name change was made to emphasize the burst of flavor that the candies provided. The rebranding was successful, and Starburst quickly gained popularity in the American market.

Over the years, Starburst has introduced various new flavors and product variations to cater to different tastes and preferences. Some popular flavor variations include tropical, sour, and FaveReds (featuring only the red and pink flavors). Starburst has also launched products such as Starburst Minis, Starburst Jellybeans, and Starburst Gummies, expanding the brand's offerings beyond the traditional chewy candies.

Today, Starburst is sold worldwide and is recognized for its vibrant packaging, chewy texture, and fruity flavors. It has become a staple in the candy industry and continues to be enjoyed by people of all ages.

Starburst Candy Memories

As a teenager, my friends and I used to go to the local movie theater most every weekend to see the latest movie. After buying our movie tickets, we would proceed directly to the concession stand to pick out some treats to consume during the movie. I would always purchase a roll of Starburst. I loved the chewy texture of the candy and the different fruity flavors that were individually wrapped.

In the darkness of the movie theater, I could not tell which Starburst flavor I was unwrapping (because I could not see the color of the wrapper), and this made eating the candy all the more fun because I would have to guess which fruit flavor I was eating. All Starburst flavors tasted great. ~ Albert from Connecticut
