Raspberries and Blackberries Candy Memories

My family used to take our summer vacations in New Hampshire, renting a rustic cabin on Big Squam Lake for two or three weeks. Swimming with the neighbor's black labs, fishing, sailing and exploring the surrounding woods, being careful to not wander too far off for fear of bears and Dad's discipline.

One of the best parts of those vacations for me was the twice-a-week trip in the small, rented motor boat to the marina, where my brother and I could spend our allowance on anything we wanted. I always spent mine on candy, and that's where I first discovered Raspberries & Blackberries, which were sold from the candy counter complete with big glass jars and scoops, with the candy weighed, placed in a small brown paper bag and handed over with a smile to take home.

The old man who ran the marina always knew what I wanted and gave me an extra scoop of those sweet berry candies every time, winking at me as he dropped those extra ones in after he weighed the bag. My favorite way to make them last (though I badly wanted to just bite, chew and gobble them up), was to nibble each individual candy bit off the jelly piece inside, then suck on that inside piece, making it last as long as possible. My brother, on the other hand, practically inhaled his and spent the rest of the time until we got to go back to the store begging and pleading for me to give him some of mine, to no avail. Those Raspberries and Blackberries were mine!

When I see a small brown paper bag, it still makes me want some... ~Julie from Arizona
