Jawbreakers History

Jawbreakers, also known as gobstoppers, are a type of hard candy that lives up to its name. These iconic confections are renowned for their jaw-dropping size and long-lasting nature. Jawbreakers are a favorite among candy enthusiasts of all ages, offering a delightful blend of flavor and entertainment.

These round, spherical candies are typically composed of layers of sugar and syrup that have been hardened through a process of repeated coating and drying. The result is a dense, solid candy ball that requires a bit of effort to bite into. The name "jawbreaker" stems from the challenge of consuming these candies, as they can indeed put one's jaw to the test.

Jawbreakers come in various sizes, ranging from small marble-sized versions to gigantic ones that can be as large as a golf ball or even bigger. They often feature a rainbow of vibrant colors, enticing the eyes with their visual appeal. The layers of color within each candy create a mesmerizing effect as they dissolve, revealing new hues along the way.

When it comes to flavors, jawbreakers offer a wide array of options to suit different tastes. Classic varieties include fruity flavors like cherry, grape, lemon, orange, and lime, while more adventurous options can be found, such as sour, tangy, or even spicy flavors. Some jawbreakers even feature a combination of flavors, providing a delightful surprise as you make your way through the candy's many layers.

What makes jawbreakers truly unique is their exceptional longevity. As their name suggests, they are designed to be enjoyed for an extended period of time. The hard outer shell slowly dissolves in the mouth, gradually revealing the flavors hidden within. This slow dissolution process adds an element of anticipation and excitement to the candy-eating experience.

Jawbreakers have been a beloved treat for generations, captivating candy lovers with their size, vibrant colors, and long-lasting flavor. Whether enjoyed as a nostalgic childhood memory or as a new discovery, these remarkable candies continue to bring joy and a delicious challenge to those who dare to indulge in them.

Jawbreakers Memories

Jawbreakers

I grew up in New England in a very small town in Maine. I have to say it was the absolute best place to grow up and led to many childhood memories. One of my fondest memories was when my grandmother used to send me to the store for groceries and to the pharmacy to pick up medicine for her. The two places were right next door to each other and only about a 15 minute bike ride from her house.

She would send me with $20.00, a shopping list and my empty backpack. She always made sure I had money left over to get penny candy from pharmacy. I always looked forward to getting the jaw breakers because they always lasted the longest. The yellow and orange were always my favorite colors and were the first ones I ate.

While I was there recently I made sure to make the time to take my niece to the pharmacy (which is still there) and let her pick out some penny candy even though it is now more like nickel candy. She asked me what I wanted and I pointed to the jawbreakers at the end of the row. She looked at me with her big brown eyes and smiled as she said " Those are my favorite too Auntie Kate". I love that I can share times like that with her and that she will grow up with the same memories I did. ~ Katie from Florida
