Candy Memories

My mother was still working and I had come home from school anticipating my favorite, Brach's Jelly Nougats! I was 13 years old and the oldest of five. We lived modestly and never had more than we needed. Brach's Candies were special because we were given only an allotted amount and they were to last us until the next time Mom was feeling generous. Upon entering my house I caught my brother helping himself to my bounty. (He had finished his Brach's!) Next thing you know fists are flying and Brach's Nougats are strewn throughout the kitchen. (I hid my Brach's Nougats in a cupboard above the refrigerator.) My brother "managed" to cut his lip in the commotion and proceeded to bleed all over the kitchen countertops, refrigerator door and cabinets. When we realized what we had done, we knew we had better clean Moms kitchen or face dire consequences. 10 minutes after we clean the mess, Mom walks in the kitchen and asked us why my brothers lip was swollen and my eye is bruised? (She still thinks a game of touch football in the street was the cause.)To this day, my brother and I share our Brach's Nougats with sweet memories of those days gone by and of how one summer day in 1974 two brothers fought over the Tastiest Treats ever made. Brach's Nougats! Michael from California
