Dentyne Gum

We are sad to announce that Dentyne Gum in the original flavor and packaging has been discontinued by the manufacturer. We are disappointed too.

Dentyne Classic Gum original flavor and the package says it all, "Taste the Tingle."

Dentyne Gum History

In 1899, a New York City druggist named Franklin V. Canning created a chewing gum which he promoted as an aid to oral hygiene. "To prevent decay, To sweeten the breath, To keep teeth white," read the package. Mr. Canning called his new gum Dentyne which is a combination of the words "dental" and "hygiene."

Dentyne Gum Memories

My dad was a sales rep for Warner Lambert for 25 years from 1961 to 1986. That company owned Adams which made candy and gum. Dentyne was one of their best sellers at the time and the gum I remember so well. Since dad had the "inside" he would bring home a cardboard box about 8 inches long filled with individual pieces of Dentyne. They were about 3/4 inches wide and 1 1/4 inches long. You couldn't buy these in the store.

I remember mother kept them in a high cupboard and would let us have one piece when we asked. I loved the way it smelled and the cinnamon taste was just right. Not too hot, but not wimpy. My friends thought it was so cool to get a piece of non store bought Dentyne. My mother would always put a few pieces in her pocketbook before church and during service she would give us one. I think it was to keep our minds occupied with chewing and not talking.

A few years back I found one of mom's pocketbooks and opened it. In the inside pocket I found an old wrapper from the gum. It really brought back good memories of a simpler time when a piece of Dentyne was good enough to bring a smile to a child. ~ Paige from Nevada
