Conversation Hearts History

Conversation hearts candy, also known as Sweethearts, is a type of small, heart-shaped candy that is typically sold around Valentine's Day. The candy is known for its colorful, pastel colors and messages of love and affection printed on the surface.

The history of conversation hearts dates back to the mid-1800s, when a Boston-based candy maker named Oliver Chase invented a machine that could quickly and efficiently produce candy in various shapes. Chase's machine was originally used to make lozenges, but he soon began producing candy in the shape of hearts for Valentine's Day.

The earliest conversation hearts were plain white and had simple messages like "Be Mine" and "Kiss Me" printed on them. Over time, the candy became more popular, and additional colors and flavors were added. By the early 1900s, conversation hearts had become a Valentine's Day staple and were sold by many different candy companies.

Today, conversation hearts are still produced by several candy manufacturers, but the original Sweethearts brand is owned by the New England Confectionery Company (NECCO). In recent years, there have been changes to the traditional conversation heart messages, with new phrases and emojis being added to reflect modern culture. However, the candy remains a popular and beloved Valentine's Day treat.

Conversation Hearts Memories

I remember this candy on Valentine's Day in grade 3. I was sitting at my desk the teacher gave out candy hearts. She gave out 3 hearts, one of mine said “be mine”.

I gave it to the guy I had a crush on. Another said “kiss me”, so I gave it to my crush. Another one said “call me” but I ate that one. Then my crush came over to my desk and said, “Do you want to go out?”, and I said sure. Then he kissed me, I was like… I have to do that more often. ~ Tanisha
