Clove Gum History

Clove gum is a type of chewing gum that is flavored with clove oil. The history of clove gum can be traced back to the late 19th century, when chewing gum was becoming an increasingly popular pastime in the United States.

The first company to produce clove-flavored gum was the Thomas Adams Company, which was founded by a man named Thomas Adams in 1876. Adams had initially tried to sell chicle, a natural latex substance used to make chewing gum, as a substitute for rubber. When this venture failed, he began experimenting with different flavors for his chewing gum products.

Clove-flavored gum was introduced by the Thomas Adams Company in the late 1880s, and it quickly became a popular flavor among gum chewers. The strong, spicy taste of clove oil was a refreshing change from the more traditional flavors of peppermint and spearmint.

Clove gum remained a popular flavor throughout the 20th century, although it was often overshadowed by other more popular flavors such as bubble gum and fruit flavors. In the 1980s, the Wrigley Company introduced a line of flavored gums called "Big League Chew," which included a clove-flavored variety.

Today, clove gum is still produced by a number of companies, although it is not as widely available as it once was. Some people enjoy the strong, spicy taste of clove gum as a refreshing alternative to other, more traditional chewing gum flavors.

Clove Gum Memories

I remember I used to get Clove Gum for 10 cents and I loved the taste of it. I would run to our local drug store and there it was on the candy rack waiting for me. I would chew one piece after another till I had a wad in my mouth. Never could get enough of this Gum taste! I got my Best Buddy Ronnie hooked on this Gum and we would fight over it when there was 1 left. Them memories are so fun to think about. ~ Michelle from Michigan
