Black Jack Taffy History

Black Jack Taffy, also known as Black Taffy, is a classic candy with a long history. Here's an overview of its story:

Black Jack taffy was first introduced in the late 19th century by the Thomas Adams Company, a prominent confectionery manufacturer. Thomas Adams, a businessman and inventor, is also credited with popularizing chewing gum in the United States.

Originally, Black Jack taffy was flavored with licorice, giving it a distinct and bold taste. The candy was known for its dark black color and chewy texture, making it a favorite among licorice enthusiasts.

Over the years, Black Jack taffy gained popularity and became a staple candy in many confectionery shops and candy stores. It was often sold in individually wrapped pieces, allowing people to enjoy the treat on the go.

In addition to its unique flavor, Black Jack taffy also became recognized for its iconic packaging. The candy was typically wrapped in black wax paper, further emphasizing its dark and mysterious image.

The Thomas Adams Company continued to produce Black Jack taffy for many years, delighting candy lovers with its distinct licorice taste and chewy texture.

In more recent years, the ownership and production of Black Jack taffy have changed hands. The Gerrit J. Verburg Company, a confectionery manufacturer based in Illinois, acquired the rights to produce and distribute Black Jack taffy. They have continued to preserve the classic recipe and flavor, ensuring that the candy remains available to fans of licorice-flavored confections.

Today, Black Jack taffy can still be found in select stores and online retailers, offering a nostalgic treat for those who enjoy the bold flavor and chewy texture of licorice candy.

The enduring appeal of Black Jack taffy speaks to its status as a beloved classic candy with a rich history. Its distinctive licorice flavor and iconic black packaging have made it a favorite among licorice enthusiasts and candy connoisseurs alike.

Black Taffy Memories

Back in the early '60's, dad had a charge account at a small family store called Gambiani's in Centenary, IN.

Every Friday when he got paid, we went to the store to pay the bill. The owner always gave us a sack full of penny candy and I would trade all of my other candy to my 2 sisters for all of their Black Jacks.

My dad must have told Louie what I did, because the next time we went, he handed me my very own little paper sack full of Black Jacks. I was in heaven! And now, thanks to you, I have my own little piece of heaven back. Now, I can get these to give to my grandson and let him know how good Black Jacks were. Thanks again! ~ Cheryl from Indiana
