Big League Chew History

Big League Chew is a popular chewing gum brand that was specifically created to mimic the experience of chewing tobacco, but without the tobacco itself. Here's an overview of its history:

Big League Chew was first introduced in 1980 by Rob Nelson and Jim Bouton. Nelson was a former professional baseball player, and Bouton was a former pitcher in Major League Baseball. The idea for Big League Chew came about when Nelson saw his young teammates at a baseball tournament using shredded bubble gum as a replacement for chewing tobacco.

Nelson and Bouton saw an opportunity to create a safe and fun alternative to chewing tobacco. They developed a chewing gum product that resembled shredded tobacco in appearance and texture but was made entirely of chewing gum.

The original Big League Chew featured shredded strands of bubble gum packed in a pouch, similar to how chewing tobacco is packaged. It was available in flavors such as Outta' Here Original, Ground Ball Grape, and Big Rally Blue Raspberry.

Big League Chew quickly gained popularity, especially among young baseball players and fans. Its association with baseball and the unique packaging made it a hit. The gum allowed users to mimic the experience of chewing tobacco without the harmful effects.

Over the years, Big League Chew expanded its flavor offerings to include varieties like Swingin' Sour Apple, Slammin' Strawberry, and Wild Pitch Watermelon. The brand also introduced different packaging options, including individual pouches and larger resealable bags.

Big League Chew is now produced by the Ford Gum & Machine Company, which acquired the brand in 2010. It remains a popular chewing gum choice among baseball enthusiasts, as well as people who enjoy its nostalgic appeal and unique shredded gum texture.

Today, Big League Chew is widely available in stores, stadiums, and online retailers. It continues to be associated with the sport of baseball and is enjoyed by people of all ages who appreciate its flavorful and fun chewing experience.gue Chew."

Big League Chew Memories

I remember when I was a really little girl, I loved baseball. I would watch baseball games on TV with my grandparents, and I would buy baseball cards by the box full, and I would always buy Big League Chew Bubble Gum because it was the coolest thing to what the real ball players chewed. I loved the shredded texture and fruit flavors, and of course the closeable pouch it came in.

I remember one time in specific, my father surprised me with tickets to go see the Detroit Tigers play baseball against the California Oakland A's. I was so excited! My dad bought me a bag of Big League Chew Bubble Gum to take with us to the game, I would chew it by the mouthful, my cheeks stuffed with the gum, and I would try to spit just like the players on the field spit their tobacco. I had a blast.

After the game, when we were leaving, I met Jose Canseco, and proudly showed him my Big League Chew, and told him that I chewed the same stuff that he did. He winked at me, and played along and told me that it was his favorite also! I won't ever forget that. ~ Ashley from Michigan
