Satellite Wafer
memories... As
a kid my favorite all time candy was and still is the flying saucer.
as the oldest kid growing up in my neighborhood I arranged all
activities with the neighborhood kids. One of my favorite games
included the flying saucers. I used to get all the kids together and
play church in my mother's garage. I would pretend to say the service
and at the end of it they all would receive communion. And yes you
guessed it, the flying saucers were the wafers. I would have a certain
way of eating them and I teach everyone how to do it. I would put them
on the tongue and let the the wafer dissolve. And then chew the little
candies that were inside! Everyone loved them and begged me to play
everyday.
As I was a kid (a long time ago...)....my grandfather
worked in a plastic manufacturing plant. One day he had brought me
home the flying saucers, and we had some plastic rolls in the shed,
outback. So I made up this game to see how far we could get the
saucers to fly, and we rolled out the plastic so they could land on
them to leave the wafers clean. After 10 people had went whoever got
theirs the farthest won them all! I called it "The Saucer
Toss"....Boy I miss those days. ~ Chris from Florida
More memories... We
are Catholic, and we would hold 'Mass' by using the saucer wafers as
Communion. The colors we used didn't matter. We would just pop open the
saucers, eat the beads and proceed with the service. As kids, we never
'confessed' this, as we thought Mom and Dad might really make us go to
confession! I still enjoy doing this today! ~ Susan from Pennsylvania
The candy that most brings back childhood memories is the candy I know best
as "Flying Saucers". Walking to the corner store and picking them up for a penny a piece. My sister and I used to break them apart and eat the
little candy beads from the inside. Then we would use the outside wafer as communion hosts and play church with them. We made sure everyone in
the family would receive communion. From attending church so often, we pretty much had the dialogue down path. I think my mom had no problem
with us having that kind of candy. ~ Eva from Michigan
When I was a little girl, I fondly remember the small Ma and Pa Grocery store 2 doors down from my
house who sold many different kinds of "penny" candies. My best friend and I would go into the store and just stare into the candy case and
wonder how we would spend our nickel.
Then we spied them, they were very different than the other candies! We were very curious about these
funny shaped saucers, so we both got our monies worth, when the lady handed us our candies, we found that they rattled! So we carefully (as
carefully as any five year old could be...) peeled back the top and lo and behold, inside were these teeney-tiny multi colored candy beads!!!
They were so cute! We carefully slide the beads in our mouths and then sucked each piece of wafer until they totally dissolved.
From that day forward, we continued to buy our special treats and never changed the way we ate them.
Thanks for letting me remember those days fondly!! ~ Regina from Florida
