In 1973, I was in the 2nd grade and very behind in my math skills. My teacher, Miss Johnsen, would spend extra time and work with me on math problems during recess. After several months of working with me, she added an incentive-Root Beer Barrels. I thought they were the best candy I'd ever tasted. So I worked really hard on my math and soon became really good; getting all of my assignments turned in and passing my tests. Every time I got an A on my tests, I would get a root beer barrel and would be happy and proud the rest of the day.
Later on in high school and college, I realized math was my favorite subject. I believe it was her patience and the root beer barrels that contributed to that. ~ Tracie from Utah
