Pez memories... Every summer I
would visit my grandfather in Beckley, West Virginia. He lived in an
old coal-mining town. I remember one main road through the town and at
the end of that road was a general store. Upon our arrival, after the
hugs and kisses were passed around, my grandfather would give my
brother and I a fifty-cent piece to spend at the candy counter in the
general store. It was the late 60’s and you could still get a lot of
candy for fifty-cents.
Every summer I could not wait
to buy my Pez dispenser and many packs of Pez. My brother would buy a
hand full of this and a hand full of that but I always bought Pez. Not
only did I have the candy to eat but also I had a great toy to play
with. For years I collected Pez. To this day, I still have just a few
of my Pez dispensers and I can’t help but buy them whenever I see them
in the stores. In fact, now my own children are as passionate for Pez
as I once was, well probably always will be. ~ Debi from Pennsylvania
In about 1959, Pez came out with a new dispenser with a little boy's head on it. They sponsored a
contest to name the little boy. Since my sister and I loved to eat Pez, my mother decided to enter the contest. She named the boy "Peppy"
because we shot those little candies out of his mouth so fast! One day, we got a telegram (which we still have) telling us that my mother
had won the contest. The prize was a children's Emenee electric organ which we kept for many years. ~ Candy from California
