Candy Memories

We were three younger sisters of six, growing up in the 40's and 50's. Our dad would often give us a nickel each and we would head for the corner drug store that contained a wonderful soda fountain and an extensive penny candy selection. We stood in front of the counter for long periods of time, often barefoot, in shorts and halter tops in the summertime. (The store owners, two brothers, served us with the same patience and courtesy they extended to all their customers, regardless of the amount of money they had to spend.) We carefully made our selections, only after consideration of each colorful, sweet confection that filled the trays on the shelves of the display case. How did it look? How did it taste? Was it chewy or hard? How long did it last? How many did you get for a penny? Such decisions! Mexican hats often was our selection. At three for a penny, we each took home a little brown paper bag of candy that lasted all afternoon and provided tons of fun. We traded our favorite flavors among each other and had contests to see who could consume a hat the fastest without chewing it. What great memories! ~ Beverly from Texas
As a child growing up in the 50s, the candy I loved was Mexican Hats. We had two elderly sisters that had a candy store in their home. I remember going to see them and they would open up the doors to this large cabinet, and on the shelves were row upon row of penny candy. The Mexican Hats were my favorite. Back then you could get 5 pieces of candy for a Penney. One day my best friend and I were on the way to the ball park, and as we were walking down the road, I was looking in the gutter for any bottles that we could turn in for a few cents, when to my great surprise, I saw the end of what I thought was a dollar bill sticking out of the dirt. When I pulled it out, I was breathless; it was not a dollar, but a 5 dollar bill. Yup you guessed it. We ran all the way to the two sister’s candy cupboard, and bought 5 dollars worth of Mexican Hats. That was 2500 pieces of candy. For weeks, myself and all of my friends were in Heaven. ~Daniel from Maryland
