Whistle Pops memories...

I used to get Whistle Pops with my sister and my cousin whenever our family would visit relatives in
Oklahoma. We'd go to my grandma's house, and my sister and cousin would unwrap theirs and immediately start whistling away, but for some
reason, I was not as skilled as they were.
They tried to show me the proper technique, and I'd blow and blow, getting so frustrated. You'd think it
wouldn't be that hard.... Most of the time, I think all I managed were faint whistles, but every now and then I got a good one in. I'm sure the
houseful of relatives was pretty annoyed, but we had a great time. ~ Alisha from Oklahoma
I remember almost every weekend on the
button, my mother would give me and my older brother three or four dollars
apiece to go and blow at the local convenience store down the street from our
house.
So we would go there and get slushes and a selection of other candies but the
one I liked the most were whistle pops. They had Popeye on the front cover and I
used to get so excited thinking to myself that I could be as cool as Popeye and
have my own official whistle that I could eat when I was done playing on it.
The best flavors had to be cherry and watermelon, without a doubt. I would
unwrap the whistle pop, stick it in my mouth and admire the little song on the
inside of the wrapper that taught me a few simple notes to play on the whistle.
There was always a different tune, such as Oh My Darlin Clementine, or Yankee
Doodle or Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.
I loved that part the best, becoming my own musician with twenty five cents! It
was great, I loved the feeling of walking home with my bag of sweets and trying
to rehearse my lines to play for my mom.
Of course, she said just eat the silly thing, but I didn't right away, because I
always tried learning how to play the song before eating it up.
That would have to be one of my very favorites as a kid. As there are many
others too numerous to mention, I thought I would go with one I had the most fun
with as it appeals to not only the taste buds and the music lover, but of
course, to all us kids at heart. ~ Elsie from Michigan
