Walnettos memories...

walnetto.jpg (217462 bytes)

This story dates back to the middle 50's. We lived in a small town in New Jersey then. Now, contrary to what you might think, New Jersey had plenty of cow boys back then. I should know, because I was one of them. I used to ride with Roy Rogers and Hop Along Cassidy. My gang and I were always looking for the bad guys.

Not far from the ranch (home), was this "May Lees" General store (the local candy store). It seemed that when ever we went out for a "ride" we would always end up at "May Lees". After all that hard riding we would mosey up to the counter and order a "drink" and some "chewing tobacco". May Lee would get us a cherry soda pop and a box of Walnettos, for a total sum 20 cents each. After we drank the soda pop, we would put two Walnettos into our mouths at once and "chew" Every now and then we would "spit" the "tobacco juice". I still remember the enjoyment and fun I had eating Walnettos. ~ John from Kentucky

When I was small, I used to spend almost every weekend with my paternal Grandmother. She was very particular about what I ate as a child, and candy was a forbidden thing. We would attend church on both Saturday evening and Sunday morning for services. If I was a 'good girl' and paid attention to the service and didn't squirm about, as children are known to do, I would be handed 3 Walnettos at the end of the service. Grandma would always tell me that they were a thank you from the 'Father, Son, and Holy Spirit' for behaving so well in their house.

Even today, when I eat a walnetto, I think of church, and Grandma. It is kind of a tribute to the fact that they taste 'Heavenly.' ~ Laurie from Mass.
