Tootsie Rolls memories...

Tootsie Roll ad from 1955

As a child growing up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, my friends and I used to play baseball almost everyday throughout the spring, summer, and well into the fall. One of our favorite games was strikeout. We chose lineups of our favorite players and played religiously.

Because our favorite players chewed tobacco, and we were much too young, we would substitute tootsie rolls waded up and stuck into our cheek to give us that major league appearance. ~ Dick from Wisconsin

Tootsie rolls bring out a bittersweet memory of my childhood. I was treasurer of my second grade summertime "under the porch club" with five other girls belonging. I took the dues (13 cents) total one day and went to the corner store for tootsie rolls. Ate them all, got a tummy ache, fessed up to my parents what I'd done and was not allowed to be treasurer any more. I still remember the look on the kids' faces when I told them. AND the wonderful chocolate tempting! ~ Mary Anne from Ohio

I have a recent memory for the Tootsie Rolls that I enjoyed as a child. When my son was 5 he was enjoying a much celebrated candy snack of Tootsie Rolls. From the time he was born I had always affectionately referred to his darling little feet as "tootsies". As he was having his snack he slipped one of the wrapped candy rolls between his toes, pointed to his foot and said, "Get it?...a "Tootsie" roll"!

I laughed out loud and knew he was a smart kid to make a pun at such a young age! He is now 13 and still enjoys Tootsie Rolls (although those darling little feet are now huge so he doesn't put them between his toes anymore!) I teach High School and reward my students for good behavior and work effort with candy treats. With all of the choices they have, their favorite is Tootsie Rolls! It's nice to know the new high-tech generation appreciates a classic! ~ Diane from Texas
