Sugar Babies memories...

Sugar Daddy and Sugar Babies ad from 1976

I had had my braces for two and half years before the orthodontist took them off. The second I left the tooth-building behind, I headed for the old general store to buy myself some Sugar Babies, which had been the equivalent of contraband with my braces on.

Alas! When I reached the store, there was no candy where the Sugar Babies where. The clerk informed me that they were sold out. Still hopeful, I asked the clerk if I could buy from his personal stash, but he said no.

After some more wheedling, we struck a bargain: I'd play the fiddle for awhile (I was pretty good at the fiddle) and he'd give me a bag of Sugar Babies.

In the middle of my third song, my mother walked into the store. "What are you doing here?" she asked me.

I gestured towards the red-faced clerk. "Earning me some Sugar Babies," I replied.

"Goodness! I have some right here in my bag."

We all loved Sugar Babies. ~ Gillian from Virginia

Every time I see a box of Sugar Babies it brings me back almost 40 years. My mother would pile my friends and I into her 63 Biscane station wagon and drop us off at the Main Theater to see a show. Each of our parents would give us some change to buy a snack for the movie. We would line up at the counter and view the selection, I would almost always purchase the Sugar Babies. We would watch movies like the Blob, sitting in the front row eating our candy.

I still can remember slowly eating my Sugar Babies, one-at-a-time to make them last through the movie and biting on them when frightened or anticipating. I remember the way they slowly melted in my mouth and how welcoming that sweet taste was and trying to make the last one in the box last a little longer than the rest. ~ Cindy from Michigan
