Spree memories...

I remember when I was a kid, I would go to the little swap and shop store up the street from our ranch. I
would always buy 5 bucks worth of sprees because I knew I could stow them away in my tackle box.
When me and my buddies would go fishing, I would break out the sprees and be able to trade a pack for what ever
cool lure or candy that they had, and still have enough to eat. Plus we could break them and use them to catch little sun fish for bait. Now my son
eats sprees the same way I did. I even caught him feeding the little sun fish with them. ~ Joe from Oklahoma
The candy I remember most growing up is Spree. Every week my sister and I would get treated to one candy from
the candy store in the mall. We both would choose Spree. My mom was always asking why we always picked the same candy every time. She picks up a roll
as well, explaining that she is going to have to give it a try to see what all the fuss is about.
When we got home everyone went in separate directions: my sister and I went out into the living room and planted ourselves behind the big chair, in
case my older brother came in he wouldn’t see our candy and want any.
I picked out a red Spree and my sister picked out a yellow one. We began licking the candy coating and then using it like a paintbrush to paint our
lips and eyelids. To this day if we see someone with too much makeup on we say “Too much Spree”. ~ Kristen from Texas
I grew up in southern California in the
60's and there was a company that had custom panel wagons that came through your
neighborhood every weekday. The company was called "Helms" and would carry bread,
milk, and some pastries. But the best part was the candy drawer. Us kids would
gather around, kind of like the ice-cream man, and spend our nickels.
My
favorite was Spree, and back then, they came in a packet, instead of a roll,
like we see today. There was also a neat picture on the back of the package, and
if my memory does not fail me, there were different scenes on the packages. For
awhile Spree seemed to disappear, then returned in the roll package we know
today. I loved them, and have always been partial to the tart candies. It's so
great to find them! ~ Lisa from Maine
I am a 38 year old "spree lover". Eating
sprees greatly reminds me of the 1970's and my childhood. My mom loved sprees
too, and she would hide them in the counter. Of course I found them, and before
too long she knew she'd better find a better hiding spot for her sprees.
My mom
bought sprees that came in individual pouches with some cool 70's graphics-can't
quite remember the details, but I wish I could find one of those "original"
pouches filled with sprees. My best friend and I ate sprees while playing barbies, at the pool, and while playing kickball- the good ole days. Sprees are
just classic and cool, and I have eaten many of them! ~ Sonya from Virginia
