Spearmint Leaves memories...

As a child growing up my mother
had a tradition which she had started while in Germany as a soldiers
wife. At Christmas time she would make German tea rings for family
and close friends. I remember that She would always make them fancy
by decorating them with holly flowers made from the "Spearmint
Leaves" Candies, and "maraschino" Cherries.
I always loved to help place the candies
and eat the leftovers, which Mom always had plenty of. The flavor and look was
never the same using anything else. The best part was going caroling and
presenting the Delight to our friends.
As I have tried to carry on this
wonderful tradition with my children I have attempted to use substitutes because
I find it difficult to find the “Spearmint Leaves” candies that make such a
wonderful decoration. But no matter what I use I am never satisfied by the
substitutes. ~ Anna from Utah
When I was a little girl (I am 93 years
old right now !) my Dad would give me a nickel every day, to buy candies. And I
would buy .05 cents worth of green (spearmint) leaves. In the store close to my
school I would always look over the different candies and always pick the
spearmint leaves.
I would bring my girlfriend with me and share with her. I
still love the taste of the green leaves but they're hard to find in the
stores. I am glad my daughter found this site. Even happier to be able to share
one of my happy childhood memories. ~ Grandma Rose from Georgia
Oh, yes, I have wonderful memories of
Spearmint Leaves and how they always tasted "just right"! Whenever I had a few
coins I would buy a small bag of them from the candy counter at the "Five and
Dime" across from my old elementary school during our noon recess. I could
either eat one very fast just to soothe that childhood sugar craving, or I could
keep one in my mouth until it slowly melted away. They began a lifelong love
affair that continues to this day. I am now 65 years of candy old and still
enjoy a good Spearmint Leaf from time to time! ~ Patricia from Indiana
