Smith Brothers Cough Drops memories...

Back to the days when I was young and rode a long way on the school bus and was dropped off just long
enough to go to the forbidden variety store across the road-which of course we crossed and bought whatever we could for five cents. Penny
candy would not work in class.- ah! but cough drops would.
So many of us would buy them and when the teacher caught us sucking on what she thought was candy we could
smugly say "but it's not candy' it's a cough drop. "Well" she would say "then that alright, I hope you feel better and it's nice not to cough in my
class." Too bad-too many of us tried it and being a teacher she caught on quick-no more Smith Brothers in class, but I sure did like the taste! ~

The licorice ones were my favorite
although I never did turn down the cherry ones. I remember being at the store
and noticing them near the gum and candy bars. Once we (me, my sister, and my
brother) saw the cough drops we would always tell our mother that we thought we
might be getting sick just so we could get some of those cough drops. Eventually
she figured out what we were doing but she would still buy them for us anyway.
Nowadays when my daughter gets sick and
complains about the bad tasting cough drops, I tell her about the 'good old
days' and the delicious licorice and cherry cough drops we used to have. She
never believes me. ~ Ruth from California
