Screaming Yellow Zonkers memories...

Late in 1969 I was introduced to Screaming Yellow Zonkers by a friend. This new
addiction was immediately passed on to my two sons, who were six and seven years
old that next year. They had a favorite place to go with just their dad. When I
would mention "Love's Farm" my boys would become jumping-beans of excitement. We
would pack a modest picnic lunch of peanut butter & jelly sandwiches and the
obligatory box of Screaming Yellow Zonkers.
A family by the name of Love owned the rural property, which was our
destination. It contained rolling hills, pastureland and a magical woods. We
would hide in the tall grass from each other, ford the small stream on a toppled
tree and swing from the vines in the woods like Tarzan. Huge vines were
everywhere, reminding us of the forests in Tolkein's stories.
Some of the vines branched out, while crossing from tree to tree, parallel to
the earth. The boy's best-liked activity was to have me place them five feet off
the ground, so I could give them a thrilling ride while they were seated on the
massive horizontal vine. I provided movement by pushing & pulling on either the
main trunk, or a branch that soared into the tops of the tree.
The highlight of our day was always to find a spot to have our lunch. AND, the
special reward for our adventures was to pass around the box of Screaming Yellow
Zonkers until it was totally empty! ~ Stu from Indiana
I remember the first time my Dad brought
home a box of Screaming Yellow Zonkers. He gave each of us a handful, then told
us we had to chew them really fast because they would grow in your mouth if you
didn't. So we ate that whole first box, chewing as if our lives depended on it
(we thought it did) He later told us it was a joke and gave us a second box to
enjoy the normal way. We always took Zonkers on car trips because the boxes were
so entertaining. I'm thrilled I can share this goody with my kids. ~ Kim from
California
