Red Hot Dollars memories...

I remember going to our local 5 & 10 store (yes, quite awhile ago) with my Grandmother, when she
would stay with us during the summer. (She lived in Florida and visited us every summer in New Jersey). She would walk with me to the store
and give me some change to buy whatever I wanted. I always picked out the red hot dollars. I just loved them. Recently I was telling this
story to my 5 & 8 year olds and they never even heard of this candy and I've been on the lookout for it since. ~ Margaret from New Jersey
Oh the memories!!! As a child living deep
in the city, I would volunteer to do the chore I hated most (pulling weeds from
our small vegetable garden) just to get a few coins so my friends and I could
walk 12 blocks to a little Drugstore named Wesslo's that still had a soda
fountain. As we entered there stood the candy jars full of RED DOLLARS! We would
get a little paper bag full and order a Green River. The drink was gone quick
but the Red dollars would last the rest of the day except for a few that I would
sneak in at bedtime. ~ Daniel from Indiana
When I was about 7, my father injured his
back on the job. I don't know if he was bored or just loved me and my small
class, but he'd appear every Friday afternoon like Santa with a brown paper bag.
He'd hand out these candies to all the kids in the class before we left for
home. All of us would get excited about 2:10 in anticipation of his arrival
since class dismissed at 2:30. He'd even hand some out to the teacher and
student teacher. He became my best friend's first crush. ~ Traci from California
