Orange Slices memories...

In my younger years back in the
1960's my brother told me about this wonderful invention called the credit
card. You could buy things now and pay later he said. All you had to do was
show them this card and you could walk away with all kinds of great stuff.
Wanting to get in on the action before the stores figured out this wasn't
going to work, I went down town to get me one. I filled out lots of
applications and patiently waited. Over the new few weeks I received several
rejection letters but finally to my surprise a letter arrived with a brand
new Sears (cardboard) credit card inside. My limit was an amazing $100. How
foolish could they be.
I immediately went down to the store with card in hand and stated cruising
the isles. Well, I have to admit, there was not one thing that I was
interested in buying until I finally hit the candy counter. For some reason
the bright Orange Slices were to hard to pass-up. My first ever purchase on
my very first credit card was one pound of Orange Slices from the Sears
candy counter. I have been hooked on the golden gems ever since. Even today
when my grandchildren visit we love sitting around putting Orange Slices in
our mouths and beaming at each other with bright orange smiles. ~ Dave from
Oregon
Back in the early 70's, as a youngster, my parents and our family would help an elderly gentleman take care of
his large yard as well as help him meet other needs. He was a retired doctor and a horticulturist. He hybridized day lilies. He was in his 80's and
had a hard time keeping up his yard.
In the area where he potted plants was a candy jar always full of orange slice candy. It was a real treat after having mowed, or weeded or whatever we
helped with to have an orange slice candy. My dad and my brother and I just loved them.
It's an awesome memory that brings back to mind the wonderful generosity and great sense of humor this great man had. Doc Switzer, you were a great
friend! ~ Larry from North Carolina
I can remember always spending time with
my sister at my grandmother's. Every summer on most holidays especially Easter
and Christmas we would visit her and she would have a bag of orange slices
waiting for us as we bombarded her with hugs and kisses. Our lives were always
filled with love, But somehow those simple pieces of orange delights just made
the day that much better.
Well my grandma has since passed on so we don't get to
have those fun moments anymore. Now anytime we want to get those fond memories
back we just run to our nearest store pick up a bag or two and sit down and talk
about those hot summers spent in that little country town in west Florida with a
lady who not only raised her own two children, six grandchildren, and a few great
grands, but some of the other children in her neighborhood.
The tradition
still lives on through her lineage. I didn't think something so small as candy
could bring so much joy. If your family doesn't have a way to bond start a new
tradition over a bowl of candy that everyone enjoys you will find a lot to talk
about after everyone is happy. ~ Tamara from Florida
