My adult daughter called me today really
excited. I didn't realize how often I had told her about my favorite candy from
when I was a little girl growing up in San Francisco. She said, "Mom come over
right away, you won't believe what I just found online." She said Mom prepare to
blow your diet. Then she showed me your web site and the beautiful picture of
Mint Juleps.
I was instantly transported to San Bruno
Avenue in the early 50's. My sister and brother and I would stop at the candy
store to spend our nickel and then go next door to the theatre to spend 15 cents
more for a ticket and sit back and try to just suck on the candy so it would
last a long time, but I always ended up chewing it. Then my bratty sister would
always stick out her tongue to show me that she still had hers when mine was
gone. I'm placing an order today. Thanks so much. ~ Donna from California
I learned to love Mint Julep candy when
my big brother would take me along to the penny candy store around the corner.
In the early 1950's, a handful of pennies from the bottom of Grammy's handbag
was a goldmine, and I always pointed to the little green wrapped squares first.
It was something about the chewy gooey feel and the cool mint flavor that was
heaven to this 4 year old!
My Mom knew they were my favorite, and
could use that fact to her advantage. One night when I climbed up onto the pile
of encyclopedias that helped me reach the dining room table, one perfect Mint
Julep perched on the table by my plate, just out of reach. "That's for you to
have when your supper is eaten!" my Mom told me. Meatloaf and green
beans... never my favorite, always left unfinished.
A battle of wills ensued. I sat, staring
at the Mint Julep, picking at the dinner, sure that Mom would give in when
everyone else had finished. My brother ate quickly, asked to be excused and left
with a candy tightly closed in his fist. Mom and Dad finished, chatted awhile
longer, then left the table. Dishes rattled in the sink, my food, already stone
cold, grew crusty. I tried a few tears, but in my Mom's house, dessert was a
treat for those who finished the meal first. "Remember the starving Armenians"
she would say.
Finally the lure of the Mint Julep did
what no other dessert could do. Not for a bowl of applesauce or even a dish of
pudding would I have persevered. I ate the meal and the Mint was mine! Mom
smiled, pulled a second Mint Julep from her apron pocket, and with a kiss on my
cheek sent me off to play. ~ Harriet from New Hampshire
When I close my eyes I can the movie
theatre I used to go to each Saturday for their matinee. I can still remember
the anticipation of getting ready to go to the movies and of buying my Mint
Juleps. My mother always gave brother, my sister and myself enough money for the
movie and one treat for each of us. We would stand at the candy counter and feel
just like kids at a candy store.
My sister always chose Jujubes and my
brother always chose Pixie Sticks. I always chose my Mint Juleps. There was no
other candy which could give you that flavor you could never describe. It was so
sweet and chewy and had the taste of almost spearmint but sweeter. I loved the
way they would come in packs of 5 or 6. They were so chewy that you could watch
a whole movie and still have a couple to take home with you after the movie.
Even at 52, I can close my eyes and
remember that taste which made your mouth water and gave you that feeling of
comfort and happiness. ~ Laurie from Mississippi
