Mexican Hats memories...

Back in the '50s, we walked to
and from school twice each day. We came home for lunch back then. On
the way home we had to pass a small, neighborhood store called "The
Cottage". When we could sneak out of the house with some change, we
would stop and buy candies like Mexican Hats. It was double fun! The
fun of doing something forbidden....buying candy, and the fun of
eating the hats.
Years later my Aunt Rosie found a place
to purchase them in bulk and would buy boxes of candy hats. She kept them in a
special place in the bedroom. Every time we walked by the bedroom we would help
ourselves. What a treat that was!! I'm happy to have found these childhood
candies again. ~ Barbara from Nebraska
Mexican hats have always been my favorite
candy. Once, I got conned into going to the Boston ballet with friends and I did
not want to go because ballet is not my thing, but I went under protest and they
were free tickets. Before we got to the theatre, we stopped at a convenience
store and I bought some mexican hats which I hadn't seen in years. The mexican
hats saved me from boredom and I ate them all during the first act much to my
friends' dismay because they thought I was very uncivilized.
They told me I kept rattling the box and
was disturbing the couple in front of us. When the intermission was over I had
the last laugh because the couple in front of us had gone to the convenience
store during intermission and came back with their own mexican hats!!! ~ Nancy
from Mass.
