Mary Janes candy memories...

Mary Janes

Ever since I was old enough to hold a spoon I would carry around a spoonful of peanut butter. Needless to say it was quite messy. After cleaning the coffee tables, couches, and every other piece of furniture that I could lay my spoon on or swipe it against, numerous times, my mother decided she needed to find another way to satisfy my craving.

One day when she was at the store she saw a bin of Mary Janes. Not knowing exactly what they were, she asked the lady standing next to her. The lady said that they were a delicious peanut butter and molasses candy. My mom thought she would give them a try, after all it was that she found a new way to give me my peanut butter or invest in a whole new house of furniture!

All it took was one bite of Mary Janes and I knew I had found a new favorite. I ate them every time I could and that is how my mom got me to clean my room, brush my teeth, eat my dinner and all the other things that kids don't like to do. I still love my Mary Janes and I would probably clean my room for a Mary Jane to this day. ~ Melissa from Missouri

I'm 47 years old and even when I was a young girl I would eat Mary Janes. My girlfriends and I would have sleepovers and make Mary Jane sandwiches. These wonderful concoctions were just a ton of Mary Janes between 2 pieces of bread, eaten like a peanut butter sandwich. To this day I still enjoy some Mary Janes from time to time and think back to those days. Nowadays when I take my children camping, we too make Mary Jane sandwiches. ~ Joanne from Illinois

There were 7 children in our family. We didn't get money to spend at school break. Normally the school provided free chocolate milk. However, in 4th grade my friend Rebecca would buy Mary Janes candy and always give me a few pieces. She'd toss them on my desk and say "Mary Janes for Mary" with a big smile. Whenever I see Mary Janes in the store I always think of Rebecca's giving attitude. Amazing how such a small gesture can mean so much to a child. ~ Mary from Kentucky
