Licorice Snaps memories...

Licorice Snaps

As a child in 1939 in a Detroit suburb named Trenton, my father and I visited a candy store in this town. At this time the candy store was a drug store named Picard's. I bought two boxes of snaps and came home with my treat.

I was thirteen years of age at that time and had a love for licorice. My habit was to hoard any licorice I received and consume it one piece at a time. My family would send away at Christimas time for a 100 boxes and this would last until my birthday in September. My best Christmas present under the tree one year was my 100 boxes of Snaps and my Silver Streak bicycle, then came hair ribbons for my braids and school clothes and Saddle shoes.

At the present age of 78 and living in Oregon I finally found snaps on the market again. This time they were in a grocery store and came in several colors. My boxed snaps in 1939 were only white and pink now I can enjoy them again I thought, but lo and behold they disappeared on me again and I am at a loss for my much loved treat. Oh, I will tell you I still practice hoarding them when I find them. I buy three or four bags and stash them in my dresser away from prying eyes. I share when I open a bag only. No children or grandchildren to share with but my husband has learned how good they are. Needless to say I am delighted they are being brought back and hope they are locally available. ~ Kathleen from Oregon

As a child I spent weekends with my Grandmother in Buffalo NY; we call her Nanee, and one of my best memories was getting a quarter each weekend to spend as I desired, and having a corner penny candy store a block away! Licorice Snaps were (and are) my favorite candy...so good to suck off the unique flavor coating, then bite into the delicious chewy licorice...I could never stop with just a few...had to eat every one I had!

Living in NC for the past 9 years, every time I visited Buffalo, I had to stock up on Snaps to bring back - until now! My husband found Snaps at a local store here in Raleigh NC and I'm in heaven. Thank You for providing this childhood treat for me in my new home town!! They accompany me to every movie I attend and are always present in my candy dish. ~ Diane from North Carolina
