Jawbreakers memories...

I grew up in New England in a very small
town in Maine. I have to say it was the absolute best place to grow up and led
to many childhood memories. One of my fondest memories was when my grandmother
used to send me to the store for groceries and to the pharmacy to pick up
medicine for her. The two places were right next door to each other and only
about a 15 minute bike ride from her house.
She would send me with $20.00, a shopping
list and my empty backpack. She always made sure I had money left over to get
penny candy from pharmacy. I always looked forward to getting the jaw breakers
because they always lasted the longest. The yellow and orange were always my
favorite colors and were the first ones I ate.
It has been a few year now since I lived
up there and my grandmother has been gone for a number of years as well however
my mother and sister have moved back to the area and my niece and nephew are now
growing up in my home town. I don't get to visit much now that I live in Florida
but I managed to go home for a few days to introduce my fiancé to my family.
While I was there I made sure to make the
time to take my niece to the pharmacy (which is still there) and let her pick
out some penny candy even though it is now more like nickel candy. She asked me
what I wanted and I pointed to the jawbreakers at the end of the row. She looked
at me with her big brown eyes and smiled as she said " Those are my favorite too
Auntie Kate". I love that I can share times like that with her and that she will
grow up with the same memories I did. ~ Katie from Florida
My grandmother always kept her grandchildren filled with different candies. What I remember most, though, was
her crystal jar full of jawbreakers. I would sit and look at the jar and all of its wonderful colors, searching for the right jawbreaker to cure my
sweet tooth. I love orange jawbreakers, so I would dig through the rainbow of candy to find one last orange jawbreaker in the jar that once held many.
My brother and sister would yell at me for digging, saying that the jawbreakers all taste the same, but I knew
the orange ones were the best. Now my grandmother is aging more and more everyday and I is battling colon cancer. Whenever I visit her, I still search
her cupboard for the crystal jar. The jar stands empty today, but my plan is to fill it with color soon, to give my grandma back her rainbow. ~ Kelly
